Arkia Berry
Arkia “Kia” Berry attended cosmetology school to become a licensed hairstylist after graduating from A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. She and Ladarrius Jamiel Brooks have one son named Landon Brooks, who was born in 2019.
In 2020, Ladarius was found fatally shot inside a burning apartment in Birmingham. After his death, Berry raised Landon as a single mother.
At around 5:30 p.m. on July 13, 2024, Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a car crash in the front yard of a residence near the Echo Highlands Park in the 1700 Block of Indian Summer Drive in Birmingham. They found a sedan riddled with bullet holes in front of the house.
Inside the car were Berry, Landon and her boyfriend Eric Ashley Jr. were fatally shot at the park’s entrance allegedly by Jacorrian Deshawn McGregor of Birmingham. Both Berry and Ashley were 28 while Brooks, who was about to begin kindergarten, was 5.
Jacorrian McGregor
McGregor is 6’2″ tall and his registered weight is 165 pounds. In 2021, he pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.
On December 22, 2024, McGregor turned 25. On February 24, 2025, he was arrested in the 100 block of Freda Lane in Birmingham by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (GCRFTF) of the U.S. Marshals Service with the help of the State of Alabama Pardons and Parole and the crime reduction team of the Birmingham Police Department.
GCRFTF investigators conducted surveillance in a location McGregor was known to frequent and observed a car with him positively identified as the driver. When they tried to make contact and arrest him, he accelerated and struck a law enforcement vehicle.
After McGregor exited the car and tried to flee on foot, he was apprehended without further incident. A 9 mm handgun found in the car was determined to be stolen out of the Birmingham area.
At 6:20 p.m., McGregor was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham where he is being without bond. He was charged with capital murder of two or more people.
Moreover, McGregor has outstanding 2024 charges of receiving stolen property and carrying a pistol without a license. He is expected to be charged in connection to the handgun and for fleeing law enforcement.

Scott Thurmond, 50, served as the chief of the Birmingham Police Department from June 24, 2022 to November 29, 2024. Michael Pickett, 40, is currently the interim chief of the department.
