2008

  • On April 2, 2008, he entered the residence of Zimmermann’s female neighbor in Madison and asked for $40 and solicited $20 from another man in the neighborhood to fix a flat tire. Afterwards, he entered Zimmermann’s apartment and fatally stabbed her.

2014

  • He confessed to Scoles that he killed Zimmermann, Scoles told a Madison detective in December 2014, the same month testing on deoxyribonucleic acid evidence lifted from Zimmermann’s clothing returned a positive match for him.

2016

  • In April 2016, he started serving a six-year prison sentence in Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin following his seventh drunk driving conviction.

2017

  • While he was in Dodge Correctional Institution, Scoles suffered injuries in a crash in Fitchburg, Dane County on July 20, 2017 and died on August 12, 2017.

2019

  • In April 2019, the anonymous letter mailed from Fox Lake Correctional Institution in 2009 underwent DNA analysis. The results revealed that only he could have licked the letter’s envelope.

2020

  • On March 20, 2020, he was arrested for Zimmermann’s murder and charged with party to first-degree intentional homicide with use of a dangerous weapon. At the time, he was an inmate at Oshkosh Correctional Institution in Oshkosh on an unrelated conviction and could be released as soon as November 2021.

  • On October 27, 2022, he admitted in court that he killed Zimmermann and told his attorney Ben Gonring that he had taken a life so he deserved life in prison.

2023

  • On January 12, 2023, Dane County Circuit Court Judge Chris Taylor sentenced him to life in prison without parole.
