At around 1:25 p.m., Haynes allegedly walked a hallway, saw multiple male students, displayed a firearm and fired at them indiscriminately. He reportedly appeared to take a point-blank shot at a student who was not able to run.

At least five students were shot and taken to the Baylor Scott and White Health and Methodist Dallas Medical Center, which are both in Dallas. The ages of the victims are between 15 and 18 and their injuries ranged from serious to not life-threatening, according to officials with the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department.

Around 900 students were in attendance that day. At around 2:20 p.m., authorities confirmed that the school campus had been secured and there was no active threat.

Aside from Dallas Police Department officers, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents were also at the scene of the incident. At around 9:00 p.m., Haynes turned himself in at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center in Dallas.

Bond for Haynes was set at $600,000. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail in Dallas and charged with four counts of aggravated assault in a mass shooting.

Classes will be cancelled at the school from April 16-17, 2025. Mental Health Services team members will be available on campus those days for students and employees who may need additional support.

Wilmer-Hutchins High School

In 1928, Wilmer-Hutchins High School was established after four smaller school districts consolidated. It was under the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District from 1928 to 2005.

In the 1950s and the 1960s, hundreds of black families moved into new home developments in Dallas. None of their children attended Wilmer-Hutchins High School, which was designated a whites-only school at the time.

By 1972, the school’s population was almost 100 percent black. In 2004, the school closed after a rainstorm damaged its roof.

In 2011, the school reopened under the Dallas Independent School District. On April 12, 2024, a student named Ja’Kerian Rhodes Ewing shot another student in the leg with a Pink Lady Handgun 38-revolver handgun.

Both Ewing and the victim were 17 at the time. After the shooting, students staged a classroom walkout to protest the school’s failure to implement strict security policies around bag-checking.

Shortly after the recent shooting at the school, Jasmine Crockett took to X to release a statement. From January 12, 2021 to January 3, 2023, she was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from the 100th district, which represents a portion of Dallas.

On January 3, 2023, Crockett assumed office as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 30th district, which covers much of Dallas. On March 29, 2025, she turned 44.

Ewing was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a weapon in a prohibited place. On April 22, 2025, he will attend a hearing.
