Alexander was the victim of the first homicide in Vancouver in 2024. After his death, health care professionals and police officers in the city started having interactions with Kai-Ji.

2024

  • On January 28, 2024, his brother Alexander was found dead on the floor of a residence on Henry Street near Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue in Vancouver and Kematch was arrested at the scene.
  • On January 29, 2024, Kematch was charged with second-degree homicide for the death of his brother Alexander. 
  • In August 2024, his mother tried to take her own life and spent weeks in the hospital.

2025

  • On April 26, 2025, a family member who contacted a hospital psych ward reported that he was suffering from delusions and paranoia. Later that day, he drove a black Audi Q7 into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day festival outside John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more. He was arrested at the scene. 
  • On April 27, 2025, he was charged with eight counts of second-degree murder.
