Both Brian Jones, 38, and John Ross Sr., 57, are residents of Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The city is around 15 miles away from Chicago, the most populous city in the state.

Brian Jones

On April 15, 2025, Jones was charged with distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The case is being investigated by the field offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago and Miami, Florida, USA.

On May 2, 2025, FBI agents from Chicago arrested Jones. He is one of the 205 child sexual abuse offenders arrested by the bureau as part of Operation Restore Justice, which was a coordinated enforcement effort to identify, track and arrest child sex predators.

All of the 55 field offices of the FBI participated in the coordinated effort for five days. They rescued a total of 115 children across the U.S.

John Ross Sr.

At around 7:55 p.m. on May 3, 2025, Ross got into a verbal altercation with a male family member, 34, at Ross’s residence in Evanston. When the family member and another man, 48, left the residence, Ross opened fire on the van, according to the Evanston Police Department.

While the van was hit by gunfire, the two men inside the vehicle were not injured. They are both residents of Evanston.

Ross was intoxicated that evening. At around 9:40 p.m., he surrendered to authorities without incident and was transported to the Evanston Police Department for further investigation.

When detectives executed a search warrant at Ross’s residence, they recovered ammunition but found no firearms. He was charged with two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder.

On May 5, 2025, Ross appeared at a detention hearing at the courthouse in Skokie, Cook County. No information from inside the court was released.
