Abra is one of the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. The others are Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province.

Eustaquio “Takit” Purugganan Bersamin was born in Bangued, Abra to Dr. Luis F. Bersamin Sr. and Rosario Purruganan. Takit served as the governor of the province from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2016.

On March 13, 2025, Takit turned 78. On June 30, 2025, he will assume office again as the governor of Abra.

Bangued is the capital of Abra and one of the 27 municipalities of the province. The municipalities collectively have 303 barangays.

On June 5, 2011, Leslie Ching represented Abra at Miss Philippines Earth 2011 and competed against 47 other candidates at the Puerto Princesa Coliseum in Puerto Princesa, Philippines. She was unplaced.

On July 7, 2024, Myrna Toribio Esguerra represented Abra at Binibining Pilipinas 2024 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She ranked first and was crowned Bb. Pilipinas International 2024.
