Aklan is one of the five provinces of the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. The others are Antique, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo.
Florencio “Joeben” Tumbocon Miraflores was born in Ibajay, Aklan to Dr. Jose Conlu Miraflores and Eusebia Tumbocon. Joeben served as the mayor of Ibajay from June 30, 1988 to June 30, 1995, the governor of Aklan from June 30, 1995 to June 30, 2004 and the congressman of the province from June 30, 2004 to June 30, 2013.
Joeben was a member of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP–Laban) from 2017 to 2024. On June 30, 2022, his son Jose Enrique “Joen” Martin Miraflores assumed office as the governor of Aklan.
Joen turned 42 on June 22, 2024. Joeben turned 73 on July 1, 2024 and will assume again as the congressman of Aklan on June 30, 2025.

Aklan has 17 municipalities namely Altavas, Balete, Banga, Batan, Buruanga, Ibajay, Kalibo, Lezo, Libacao, Madalag, Makato, Malay, Malina,o Nabas, New Washington, Numancia and Tangalan. Collectively, these municipalities have 327 barangays.
On May 2, 2025, MJ Isberto Fernandez represented Kalibo and Taylor Marie de Luna represented Malay at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 64 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Fernandez was unplaced while de Luna finished in the Top 24.
