Apayao, Philippines has seven municipalities namely Calanasan, Conner, Flora, Kabugao, Luna, Pudtol and Santa Marcela. The province has a total of 133 barangays, 21 of which are in Kabugao, the capital of the province.
The mayor of Calanasan was Elias “Butzy” Cayaba Bulut Jr. from June 30, 1998 to June 30, 2001 and his sister Eleonor “Leah” Cayaba Bulut Begtang from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2010. She was the congresswoman of Apayao from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2019 and the governor of the province from June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2022.
Butzy was the governor of Apayao from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2019 and the congressman of the province from June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2022. On June 30, 2022, he assumed office again as the governor of the province and Leah assumed office as the congresswoman of the province.
Leah turned 61 on February 28, 2025 and Butzy will turn 56 on May 15, 2025. On June 30, 2025, she will assume office as the congresswoman of Apayao and he will assume office as the governor of the province.
2025 Apayao election results
On May 12, 2025, Apayao elected its new congressman, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two provincial districts.

Apayao is one of the six provinces in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. The others are Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province.
On May 13, 2023, Kristeen Mae Boccang represented Apayao at Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and competed against 37 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.
