Basilan, Philippines has two component cities namely Isabela and Lamitan and 11 municipalities namely Akbar, Al-Barka, Hadji Mohammad Ajul ,Hadji Muhtamad, Lantawan, Maluso, Sumisip, Tabuan-Lasa, Tipo-Tipo, Tuburan and Ungkaya Pukan. All parts of the province is in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) except Isabela, which is part of the Zamboanga Peninsula region.
Buli-Buli, Sumisip native Hadjiman Sabbihi “Jim” Hataman Saliman served as the congressman of Basilan from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2016. Also born in Buli-Buli, his brother Mujiv Sabbihi Hataman was the ARMM governor from December 22, 2011 to February 26, 2019.
Jim assumed office as the governor of Basilan on June 30, 2016 and Mujiv assumed office as the congressman of the province on June 30, 2019. On June 30, 2025, they will assume office as the province’s vice governor and governor, respectively.
2022 Basilan election results
On May 12, 2025, Basilan elected its new congressman, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two provincial districts.

Created on November 17, 1989, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the Philippines had five provinces namely Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. On February 26, 2019, the region was replaced by the BARMM, which has five provinces namely Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi.
