Eric Go Yap was born in Santa Cruz, Manila, Philippines, which is around 250 kilometers away from La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines. Baguio City is geographically located in Benguet but is independent from the province.

Nestor Fongwan Sr. served as a councilor in La Trinidad from 1988 to 1992, the vice mayor of the municipality from 1992 to 1995 and its mayor from 1998 to 2007. He was the governor of Benguet from 2007 and 2016 and the congressman of the province from June 2019 until his death on December 18, 2019.

On January 20, 2020, Yap assumed office as the appointed caretaker of Benguet. He was elected as the congressman of the province on May 9, 2022 and reelected on May 12, 2025.

On May 13, 2023, Joemay-an Leo represented Benguet at Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and competed against 37 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.

On May 2, 2025, Maiko Wai-tan Ibarde represented Benguet at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 65 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. She finished in the Top 24.
