Biliran, Philippines is home to “Pinoy Idol” winner Gretchen Stephanie Mendiola Espina. She won the GMA Network singing competition show in 2008.

On June 30, 2022, Espina assumed office as the mayor of Naval, Biliran. Her father Rogelio “Roger” Jimenez Espina served as province’s governor from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2010 and from June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2022 and congressman from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2019.

2025 Biliran election results

On May 12, 2025, Biliran elected its new congressman, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. On June 30, 2025, Rogelio will turn 65 and will assume office again as the governor of the province while Gretchen will continue her term as the mayor of Naval.

Biliran has eight municipalities namely Almeria, Biliran, Cabucgayan, Caibiran, Culaba, Kawayan, Maripipi and Naval, which collectively have 132 barangays. Naval is the capital of the province.

On September 21, 2019, Julius Christian David Buenafe represented Biliran at Misters of Filipinas 2019 and competed against 21 other candidates at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.

On July 26, 2020, Ivy Jean Quimbo represented Kawayan at Miss Philippines Earth 2020 and competed against 32 other candidates in a virtual coronation ceremony. She was unplaced.

On October 25, 2020, Skelly Ivy Florida represented Biliran at Miss Universe Philippines 2020 and competed against 45 other candidates at the Cordillera Convention Hall of Baguio County Club in Baguio City, Philippines. She finished in the Top 16.

On December 4, 2022, Shindell Atibula represented Biliran at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2022 and competed against 37 other candidates at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City. She finished in the Top 21.
