Cagayan de Oro, Philippines became a town in 1871 and a city on June 15, 1950. It was recognized as a highly urbanized city on November 22, 1983.

The Northern Mindanao region has two independent cities namely Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and five provinces namely Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental. Cagayan de Oro is geographically located in Misamis Oriental but independent from the province.

On May 22, 2024, Lynn Eirene Lomongo represented Cagayan de Oro at Miss Universe Philippines 2024 and competed against 52 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.
