Cotabato City is geographically located in Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines but the city is independent from the province. The city and the province are in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

On December 22, 1979, Cotabato City became a highly urbanized city. It was established as a municipality on October 29, 1903 and it became a city on June 20, 1959.

Cotabato City has a total land area of 176.0 square kilometers. The city has 37 barangays.

On August 8, 2021, Alexandra Salazar represented Cotabato City at Miss Philippines Earth 2021 and competed against 65 other candidates in a virtual coronation ceremony. She finished in the Top 20.
