Dagupan is geographically located in Pangasinan, Philippines but the city is independent from the province. The city is known as the milkfish capital of the country.
Pangasinan has six congressional districts. The fourth district consists of Dagupan and the municipalities of Manaoag, Mangaldan, San Fabian and San Jacinto.
Jose Claveria de Venecia Jr. was the congressman of Pangasinan’s fourth district from 1987 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2010. Born in Dagupan, he turned 88 on December 26, 2024.
On June 20, 1947, Dagupan officially became a city. Since 2002, the city has been celebrating the Bangus Festival every April.

On August 16, 2014, Cynthia Caldona represented Dagupan at Miss Grand Philippines 2014 and competed against 16 other candidates at the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center in Quezon City. She finished in the Top 10.
On October 24, 2023, Alex Herberich represented Dagupan at Mister Pilipinas Worldwide 2024 and competed against 15 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. He was unplaced.
