Davao de Oro is one of the five provinces in the Davao Region. The others are Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.
Davao City is the only independent city in the Davao Region. The city is geographically located in Davao del Sur but is independent from the province.
Born in Davao City, Jayvee Tyron Lim Uy served as the governor of Compostela Valley from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2022 and assumed office as the vice governor of the province on June 30, 2022. On December 7, 2019, the province was renamed Davao de Oro.
From 2018 to 2024, Uy was a member of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, a political party formed by Sara Duterte. On May 8, 2025, he turned 40.

Davao de Oro has 11 municipalities namely Compostela, Laak, Mabini, Maco, Maragusan, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan, New Bataan and Pantukan. The province has 237 barangays, 28 of which are in Nabunturan, the capital of the province.
On April 29, 2023, Athena Guardados represented Pantukan at Miss Philippines Earth 2023 and competed against 27 other candidates at the Toledo City Sports Center in Toledo, Cebu, Philippines. She was unplaced.
