Davao Occidental is one of the five provinces in the Davao Region of the Philippines. The others are Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental.
Davao City is the only independent city in the Davao Region. The city is geographically located in Davao del Sur but is independent from the province.
Founded on October 28, 2013, Davao Occidental has five municipalities namely Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, Malita, Santa Maria and Sarangani. The municipalities collectively have 105 barangays.
Born in Davao City, Franklin “Colin” Peralta Bautista served as the mayor of Malita from February 2, 1988 to June 30, 1998 and from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2007. He was the congressman of the second district of Davao del Sur from June 30, 1998 to June 30, 2001 and from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2016.
Bautista was the vice governor of Davao Occidental from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2022 and he has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2022. He turned 73 on April 1, 2025.

On May 12, 2025, Davao Occidental elected its new congressman, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two provincial districts.

On September 30, 2021, Krizzaleen Mae Valencia represented Davao Occidental at Miss Universe Philippines 2021 and competed against 27 other candidates at the Henann Resort Convention Center of Alona Beach in Panglao, Bohol, Philippines. She was unplaced.
