Davao Oriental is one of the five provinces in the Davao Region of the Philippines. The others are Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental.
Mati is the only component city of Davao Oriental, which has a total of 183 barangays. The province has 10 municipalities namely Baganga, Banaybanay, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, Governor Generoso, Lupon, Manay, San Isidro and Tarragona.
Born in Manay, Nelson “Boy” Lechoncito Dayanghirang served as the congressman of the first district of Davao Oriental from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2016 and the governor of the province from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2022. He turned 59 on January 24, 2025 and will assume office again as the governor of the province on June 30, 2025.

On May 13, 2023, Klyza Ferrando Castro represented Davao Oriental at Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and competed against 37 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She finished in the Top 18.
