The Dinagat Islands is one of the five provinces in the Caraga region of the Philippines. The others are Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

Arlene “Kaka” Javellana Bag-ao served as the congresswoman of the Dinagat Islands from June 30, 2013 to June 30, 2019 and the governor of the province from June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2022. Nilo Pepito Demerey Jr. has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2022.

Bag-ao turned 55 on July 3, 2024 and Demerey turned 56 on October 23, 2024. On June 30, 2025, she will assume office again as the congresswoman of the Dinagat Islands.

On May 12, 2025, the Dinagat Islands elected its new congressman, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two provincial districts.

The Dinagat Islands has seven municipalities namely Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, Libjo, Loreto, San Jose and Tubajon. Collectively, the municipalities have 100 barangays, 12 of which are in San Jose, the capital of the province.

Originally part of Surigao del Norte, the Dinagat Islands became a province on December 2, 2006. On January 26, 2007, the Philippines’ 14th president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo appointed the first officials of the new province and on July 1, 2007, the first elected officials took office.
