Isabella, Philippines was founded on May 1, 1856. It was named after Isabella II, who was born María Isabel Luisa de Borbón y Borbón-Dos Sicilias in Madrid, Spain to King Ferdinand VII and Queen Maria Christina.
From September 29, 1833 to September 30, 1868, Isabella II was the queen regnant of Spain. She turned 73 on October 10, 1903 and died in Paris, France on April 9, 1904.

On May 12, 2025, Isabela elected its new congressmen, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has three cities namely Cauayan, Ilagan and Santiago and 34 municipalities.
Cauayan and Ilagan, the capital of Isabela, are component cities. Santiago is an independent component city.
