In 1730, Augustinian missionaries in the Philippines founded a municipality called Opon. On June 17, 1961, it became a city and was renamed Lapu-Lapu.
The city was named after Lapulapu, the chieftain who led the Filipino warriors who defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan on the island of Mactan in Cebu, Philippines on April 27, 1521. The island is now divided into the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova, Cebu.
Born in Lapu-Lapu, Junard “Ahong” Quirante Chan assumed office as the mayor of the city on June 30, 2019. He turned 56 on September 8, 2024 and will assume office as the congressman of the city on June 30, 2025.
