Lucena is geographically located in Quezon, Philippines but is independent from the province. The city has coconut oil mills that produce lard, margarine, soap, cooking oil, oil-based medicines and other oil-based household products. 

On July 1, 1991, Lucena was officially recognized as a highly urbanized city. It was named after Father Mariano Granja, a Spanish friar from Lucena, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain.

Lucena is home to Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, which was established on February 11, 1947. “Philippine Idol” winner Maureen “Mau” Flores Marcelo attended the university and Miss International 2018 first runner-up Maria Ahtisa Rodriguez Manalo graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy.

On May 2, 2025, Renee Isabella de la Cruz represented Lucena and Manalo represented Quezon at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 64 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. Manalo won the title while de la Cruz finished in the Top 24.
