Peter Mamawag Unabia is a native of Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines and an alumnus of Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. While Cagayan de Oro is geographically located in Misamis Oriental, Philippines, the city is independent from the province.

Unabia was a member of the provincial board of Misamis Oriental’s first district from 2007 to 2010 and the congressman of the district from 2010 to 2019. He has been a member of Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats since 2021.

From 2022 to 2025, Unabia served as the governor of Misamis Oriental. On April 29, 2025, he turned 63.

The two component cities and 23 municipalities of Misamis Oriental collectively have 424 barangays. The province is home to Annabelle Mae McDonnell, Russel Joy Ranido and Gwen Marie Perion.

On April 30, 2022, McDonnell represented Misamis Oriental at Miss Universe Philippines 2022 and competed against 30 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She ranked fourth and was named the first runner-up.

On May 11, 2024, Ranido represented Balingasag, Misamis Oriental and Perion represented Opol, Misamis Oriental at Miss Philippines Earth 2024 and competed against 27 other candidates at the Talakag Gym in Talakag, Bukidnon. They were both unplaced.
