Naga is geographically located in Camarines Sur, Philippines but the city is independent from the province. The city was established as a town in 1575 by order of Francisco de Sande Picón, who served as the third governor general of the country from August 25, 1575 to April 1580.

Born in Caceres, Extremadura, Spain, de Sande died on September 12, 1602. He was 61.

Born in Naga, Maria Leonor “Leni” Gerona Robredo turned 60 on April 23, 2025. She served as the 14th vice president of the Philippines from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2022 and will assume office as the first ever female mayor of Naga on June 20, 2025.

Camarines Sur has five legislative districts. Naga is in the third district along with the municipalities of Bombon, Calabanga, Camaligan, Canaman, Magarao, Ocampo and Pili.

On May 12, 2025, Naga elected its new mayor, vice mayor and councilors. The city has 27 barangays and 121,773 registered voters.
