The Negros Island Region of the Philippines was first established on May 29, 2015 with two provinces namely Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental and one city called Bacolod. The region was abolished on August 9, 2017 and reestablished on June 11, 2024 with Siquijor added as one of its provinces.

Bacolod is geographically located in Negros Occidental but the city is independent from the province. On May 12, 2025, the province elected its new congressmen, governor, vice governor and provincial board members.

Negros Occidental has 12 component cities namely Bago, Cadiz, Escalante, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, La Carlota, Sagay, San Carlos, Silay, Sipalay, Talisay and Victorias. The province also has 19 municipalities namely Binalbagan, Calatrava, Candoni, Cauayan, Don Salvador Benedictor, Enrique B. Magalona, Hinigaran, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Isabela, La Castellana, Manapla, Moises Padilla, Murcia, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, San Enrique, Toboso and Valladolid.

On May 2, 2025, Kayla Jane Usison represented Bago and the Filipino community of San Francisco, California, United States and Franches Anne Laquibla represented Negros Occidental at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 64 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. They were both unplaced.
