Born in Écija, Seville, Andalusia, Spain, Rafael María de Aguilar y Ponce de León served as the 56th governor-general of the Philippines from September 1, 1793 to August 7, 1806. In 1804, he proposed the modernization of Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines.
De Aguilar turned 92 on July 10, 1806 and died in Manila on August 8, 1806. Nueva Ecija, Philippines was named after his birthplace.

Dubbed the rice granary of the Philippines, Nueva Ecija produces the largest rice yield in the country. The province is home to Chanel Olive Thomas, who is based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
On April 30, 2017, Thomas represented Nueva Ecija at Binibining Pilipinas 2017 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She ranked third and was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2017.
On May 2, 2025, Thomas represented Nueva Ecija and the Filipino community of Melbourne at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 65 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. She finished in the Top 24.
