Eduardo “Ed” Baltazar Gadiano was born in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines. He was elected as the governor of the province in 2019 and was reelected in 2022 and 2025.
Occidental Mindoro was founded on November 15, 1950. Its capital is Mamburao, which is around 74 kilometers away from Sablayan.

Apo Reef, a roughly triangular coral atoll formation, is located in Occidental Mindoro. Aside from Mamburao and Sablayan, the province has nine other municipalities namely Abra de Ilog, Calintaan, Looc, Lubang, Magsaysay, Paluan, Rizal, San Jose and Santa Cruz.
On June 11, 2016, Rachelle Quiñonez represented Lubang and Karen Claudene Barot represented San Jose at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 44 other candidates at the University of Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. They were both unplaced.
On July 11, 2021, Princess Kien Guanzon represented Occidental Mindoro at Binibining Pilipinas 2021 and competed against 33 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. She was unplaced.
On May 2, 2025, Ain Niqyla Abad represented Occidental Mindoro at Miss Universe Philippines 2025 and competed against 65 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. She finished in the Top 24.
