Olongapo was the last territory surrendered by the United States to the Philippines in the 1950s. The territory became a city on June 1, 1966 and was recognized as a highly urbanized city on December 7, 1983.

The Central Luzon region has two independent cities namely Angeles and Olongapo and seven provinces namely Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales. Olongapo is geographically located in Zambales but is independent from the province.

On June 28, 2023, Micahelle Joy Dumalaon represented Olongapo at Mister International Philippines 2023 and competed against 53 other candidates at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. He was unplaced.
