Santiago, Philippines was a pueblo called Carig. Spanish missionaries called it the Santiago Apostol de Carig, which became a town in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines in 1839.

On May 1, 1856, Isabela became a province in the Philippines with the Santiago Apostol de Carig as one of its towns. In the 1950s, the town was renamed Santiago.

On May 5, 1994, Santiago became an independent component city of Isabela. The city is independent from the province but is still governed by the congressman of the province’s fourth district.

Santiago native Heherson Turingan Alvarez was a senator of the Philippines from June 30, 1987 to June 30, 1998 and the congressman of Isabela’s fourth district from June 30, 1998 to March 29, 2001. He turned 80 on October 26, 2019 and died on April 20, 2020.

Ibanag singer Sheena Mae Catacutan is also a Santiago native. In November 2020, she became a member of the girl group Bini, which debuted on June 11, 2021.
