Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat served as the seventh sultan of Maguindanao from 1619 to 1671. He was a direct descendant of Shariff Muhammed Kabungsuwan, a Malay-Arab noble from Johor, Malaysia.

Sultan Kudarat, Philippines was named after Kudarat. It was part of Cotabato, a province established in 1914 and dissolved in 1973.

Parts of Cotabato became the provinces of Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, North Cotabato, Saranggani, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato. North Cotabato was later renamed Cotabato.
