Sulu is one of the 82 provinces in the Philippines. The province has 19 municipalities namely Banguingui, Hadji Panglima Tahil, Indanan, Jolo, Kalingalan Caluang, Lugus, Luuk, Maimbung, Omar, Panamao, Pandami, Panglima Estino, Pangutaran, Parang, Pata, Patikul, Siasi, Talipao and Tapul.

Born in Maimbung, Abdusakur “Sakur” Mahail Tan was a councilor in Jolo from 1981 to 1987. He was the congressman of the first district of Sulu from 1987 to 1992 and the province’s governor from 1996 to 2001 and from June 2007 to June 2013 and vice governor from June 2013 to May 2016.

On June 30, 2019, Tan assumed office again as the governor of Sulu. He will assume office as the vice governor of the province again on June 30, 2025 and will turn 75 on July 13, 2025.

On May 12, 2025, Sulu elected its new congressmen, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two legislative districts.

Collectively, the 19 municipalities of Sulu have 410 barangays. Eight of these are in Jolo, the capital of the province.

Representing Jolo, Nur Shaira Ventura was one of the 40 contestants of Miss Millennial Philippines 2018, which aired on GMA Network as a segment of the show “Eat Bulaga” from August 25, 2018 to October 27, 2018. She finished in the Top 10.

Ventura went on to become a model and a registered nurse. She graced the April 2024 cover of Vogue Philippines.
