Tacloban is geographically located in Leyte, Philippines but the city is independent from the province, which has 40 municipalities. The city still serves as the capital of the province.

On January 17, 2015, Pope Francis visited Tacloban. He turned 88 on December 17, 2024 and died in Vatican City on April 21, 2025.

On May 12, 2025, Tacloban elected its new mayor, vice mayor and councilors. The city has 146,293 registered voters.

Since 1987, Tacloban has been part of the first congressional district of Leyte along with the municipalities of Alangalang, Babatngon, Palo, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Tanauan and Tolosa. Since June 30, 2019, Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez has been the congressman of the district.

In 1999, Romualdez married Yedda Marie Mendoza Kittilsvedt Romualdez. On October 26, 1996, she represented the Philippines at Miss International 1996, competed against 47 other candidates at the Kanazawa Theater in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan and finished in the Top 15.

On October 24, 2023, Justine Carl Ong represented Tacloban at Mister Pilipinas Worldwide 2024, competed against 15 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines and finished in the Top 6. On February 18, 2024, he was appointed Mister International Philippines 2024.

On May 22, 2024, Tamara Ocier represented Tacloban at Miss Universe Philippines 2024 and competed against 52 other candidates at the same venue. She finished in the Top 20.
