Zamboanga City is the only independent city in the Zamboanga Peninsula region of the Philippines. The region has four provinces namely Sulu, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay.

Recognized as a highly urbanized city on November 22, 1983, Zamboanga City is geographically located in Zamboanga del Sur but independent from the province. The city has two legislative districts.

On April 29, 2023, Fermizulli Silal represented Zamboanga City at Miss Philippines Earth 2023 and competed against 27 other candidates at the Toledo City Sports Center in Toledo, Cebu, Philippines. She finished in the Top 15.

On May 11, 2024, Ansha Lichelle Jones represented Zamboanga City at Miss Philippines Earth 2024 and competed against 28 other candidates at the Talakag Covered Court in Talakag, Bukidnon, Philippines. She finished in the Top 10 and was named one of the five runners-up.
