At around 3:00 a.m. on May 3, 2025, hours before the Massaponax High School prom, Michael Jr. and two other teenagers, who are minors, filmed themselves playing a prank called ding-dong-ditch with a plan to post the videos on TikTok. They rang the doorbell of a residence on McKenzie Lane in Fredericksburg.

Tyler Chase Butler, 28, who owns the residence, was inside. The three teenagers banged, kicked and slammed on Butler’s garage door as shown by the home surveillance footage of one of the homeowner’s neighbors.

According to Butler, he believed someone was trying to break into his house that early morning so he opened fire. Two of the pranksters including Michael Jr. were shot while the other one was not hurt.

Michael Jr. died at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg while the other inured teenager survived. Butler was arrested and booked in to the Rappahannock Regional Jail in Stafford, Virginia without bond.

Butler was charged with with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Michael Jr., malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. On May 21, 2025, Robinson Law, PLLC released a statement on behalf of the gunman’s family.

“Tyler found himself in an unimaginable situation, forced to protect his home and his loved ones in the early hours of the morning,” Butler’s family stated. “We are aware of the profound loss experienced by the loved ones of the young man who lost his life. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. We urge the public and media to avoid speculation and allow the facts to be fully examined.”
