Lorraine Pualani Shin, 79, of Hilo, Hawaii, United States believes that her son Jay Dee “B.J.” Penn III, 46, is suffering from Capgras syndrome and has filed for a restraining order against him. He is a former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter.

Joseph Capgras

A person suffering from Capgras syndrome, also known as Capgras delusion, believes that a family member, a friend or a pet has been replaced by an identical impostor. It is a psychiatric order named after Jean Marie Joseph Capgras.

Born in Verdun-sur-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitania, France, Capgras received his medical degree in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne, Occitania. From 1929 to 1936, he was associated with Hôpital d’Instruction des Armées Sainte-Anne in Toulon, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France.

In 1923, Capgras and his intern Jean Reboul-Lachaux published a study that described Capgras delusion. Capgras turned 76 on August 23, 1949 and died in Paris, France on January 27, 1950.

BJ Penn

Penn was born in Kailua, Hawaii to Jay Dee Penn and Shin. Jay Dee is of Irish American descent while Shin is of Korean and Hawaiian descent.

On May 4, 2001, BJ made his professional mixed martial arts debut at “UFC 31” in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. He lost his last seven MMA fights between October 29, 2011 and May 11, 2019.

In September 2018, BJ trained at Nova Uniao in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and met Camila Amado. Their daughter Mahina Amado was born in the city on October 29, 2019.

On October 5, 2018, BJ’s then girlfriend Shealen Uaiwa, then 29, obtained a temporary restraining order and petition for an order of protection in Hawaii Family Court, accusing him of verbally abusing and menacing her in front of their two daughters and her mother. After a hearing in February 2019, the order was extended and set to expire on October 8, 2021.

On November 4, 2019, Camila filed a paternity investigation lawsuit at the Barra da Tijuca Regional Court in Rio de Janeiro, asking BJ to legally recognize Mahina. In January 2020, a deoxyribonucleic acid test was done and it confirmed that he is the father of the girl.

Lorraine Shin

On November 3, 2020, Shin ran for election to the Hawaii House of Representatives to represent the first district. As the Republican candidate, she lost to her Democratic opponent Mark Nakashima.

On May 11, 2025, according to Shin, she returned home from a trip and found all her belongings such as clothes, shoes, jewelry, personal items and her bed removed from her bedroom. She filed a theft report with police.

Shin made a separate theft report claiming that on May 16, 2025, according to Shin, her personal purse with her driver’s license, credit card and locks for her safe were stolen. BJ allegedly told her that all the items in the safe belonged to him.

On May 25, 2025, according to Shin, she once again returned home from a weekend trip and found that BJ allegedly placed duct tape on her video cameras to block video camera and placed glue into her deadbolt on her bedroom door to stop me from entering her bedroom. In a restraining order she filed against him, she claimed that he believes she is an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.
