Protests in Los Angeles, California, United States erupted on June 6, 2025 after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided several locations in the city to arrest individuals allegedly involved in illegal immigration to the country. The California National Guard was mobilized amidst the breakout of civil unrest and was later relieved by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Marcos Leao
On June 13, 2025, around 200 US Marines started protecting federal property and personnel in Los Angeles. That day, they temporarily detained Marcos Leao, 27, at the Wilshire Federal Building on Wilshire and Sepulveda Boulevards in Sawtelle, Los Angeles.
Leao’s hands were restrained with zip ties and he was handed over to civilians from the Department of Homeland Security. He is a U.S. citizen who is of Angolan and Portuguese descent.
Leao spoke to reporters after he was released. According to him, he was a U.S. Army veteran who gained U.S. citizen ship through military service.
The US Marines asked Leao to stop when he crossed a yellow tape boundary on his way to the office of the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Wilshire Federal Building, he told reporters. This is the first known detention by active-duty troops deployed in Los Angeles by 47th U.S. president Donald Trump, 78.

Los Angeles native Alex Padilla, 52, served as California’s 30th secretary of state from January 5, 2015 to January 20, 2021. He became the state’s senior senator on September 29, 2023.
On June 12, 2025, Padilla waited at the Wilshire Federal Building for a scheduled briefing from U.S Air Force general Gregory Guillot, 58. The briefing was delayed when U.S. secretary of homeland security Kristi Noem, 53, held a press conference in a nearby room on the protests of ICE operations in the city.
Padilla attended the press conference and was seated behind press reporters and cameras. When he walked towards the podium and tried to ask Noem questions, U.S. Secret Service agents forcefully removed him.
