Recently, John visited his former host family in Germany. On August 24, 2025, he saw two women being harassed by two men on a tram in Dresden, Saxony, Germany and intervened.

One of the suspected attackers is a man, 21, from Syria. After he physically assaulted John, the suspect’s accomplice allegedly came back and stabbed the Colonie man in the face.

Passengers used tissues to treat John’s wounds. He was rushed to the hospital where he received surgery for a deep facial wound.

Logan told the New York Post that he would have been surprised if John had not stepped in. The older brother said it was part of his younger brother’s character and that was just the way they were raised.

The Syrian man was arrested but was later released by prosecutors because there were insufficient grounds for detention. On August 26, 2025, the U.S. embassy in Germany released a statement about the crime.

“While courageously intervening to protect a fellow passenger, he was viciously attacked,” the embassy said of John. “We urge German authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and punish them to the fullest extent permitted by law. Safety is a collective responsibility—no one is safe until all are safe.”
