John Wesley Finney, 51, of Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois, United States is in jail. He was Amy Jo Finney‘s husband.

After graduating from Mount Vernon Township High School in Mount Vernon, Amy went to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. She worked as a certified dementia practitioner and a psychiatric nurse.

Amy has a sister named Kira Kash and two brothers namely Christopher Kyle Fleener and Derek Wayne Fleener. Their mother Jo Ann Hoffman Fleener was born in Jefferson County to Melvin Hoffman and Ruth Ann Davis

On September 15, 2016, Jo Ann died at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. She was 55.

John Finney

John and Amy lived in the 7000 block of North Illinois Highway 148 in Mount Vernon. Aside from Mount Vernon, he has lived in other parts of Illinois including Ina, Texico and Woodlawn.

On April 2, 2025, John and Amy got married. On August 31, 2025, he allegedly shot her during a domestic dispute at their residence.

Amy died from gunshot wound. She was 42.

At around 8:03 p.m. on September 1, 2025, a concerned citizen called the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The concerned citizen said they spoke to John on the phone and had a “strong indication” that a murder took place.

Upon receiving the report, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert for John’s gray 2007 Ford Escape. Just after 9:00 p.m., a police officer in Christopher, Franklin County, Illinois found the vehicle at Illinois Highway 14 and Illinois Highway 148 and followed it west on Highway 148.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled the vehicle over in the 9000 block of Birch Road in Du Quoin, Perry County, Illinois. Amy was found dead in the hatchback area of the vehicle.

The Du Quoin Police Department, the Illinois State Police and the Perry County Sheriff’s Office helped arrest John at the scene. They called the Perry County coroner collect Amy’s body.

John was charged with first-degree murder. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Mount Vernon.
