Kamakea Iaea of Hawaii, United States has died. He was 17.
Kaison Kaholo
On the evening of September 5, 2025, there was a party at Zablan Beach Park in Nanakuli, Oahu, Honolulu, Hawaii. Earlier that day, there was a football game between Nanakuli and Waianae, Honolulu.
At around 2:30 a.m. on September 6, 2025, Honolulu Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the area. Occupants from a white four-door Toyota Camry and a grey four-door Toyota Corolla exchanged gunfire before fleeing the park.
Iaea and Kaison Kamakanahiwah Kaholo, 19, of Hawaii were shot during the gunfire exchange. First responders found Iaea lying in the road on Pohakunui Avenue in Nanakuli and rushed him to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition.
Kaholo arrived at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center in Waianae with a gunshot wound. When he spoke to Honolulu Police Department officers, he told them he was shot at the beach and did not know who shot him.
In connection with the shooting, the Honolulu Police Department initially opened two attempted murder investigations. Like Iaea, Kaholo was considered a victim.
After being identified as a suspect, Kaholo turned himself in at 9:25 a.m. on September 8, 2025. At 11:59 a.m. that day, Iaea was pronounced brain dead.
At 6:30 p.m., Kaholo was charged with attempted murder in the second degree. His bail was set at $500,000.
The investigation of the case was reclassified from attempted murder to murder in the second degree. On September 9, 2025, Kaholo made his initial appearance in court.
On September 10, 2025, a grand jury in Oahu indicted Kaholo on second-degree attempted murder, carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and place to keep pistol. He is being held without bail at Oahu Community Correctional Center in Honolulu.
