Lieutenant Colonel His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen ibni Hassanal Bolkiah (عبد المتين) stands fifth in the line of succession to the ancient throne of Brunei. But in the inaugural edition of Mister Frontier International, he has emerged first.
Aside from being a military officer, the prince is also a diplomat and a polo player. He was born at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in Brunei–Muara, Brunei Darussalam to Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz’zaddin Wad’daulah and Mariam binti Abdul Aziz.
Since 1967, the prince’s father has been reigning as the sultan of Brunei, which is ranked seventh in the world by gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity. The sultan is the world’s longest running current monarch.
Prince Abdul Mateen
In 2010, Prince Abdul Mateen graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Sandhurst, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom as a second lieutenant. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international politics from King’s College London in London, England in 2014 and a master’s degree in international diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London in London in 2016.
In 2015, Prince Abdul Mateen attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta as a representative of his father. Together, the two attended the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting in Belgium in 2019 and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda in 2022.
In 2018, Prince Abdul Mateen founded his own professional polo team called MB Polo. He was a member of the national polo team that represented Brunei in the Southeast Asian Games in 2017, 2019 and 2025.
Prince Abdul Mateen was promoted to the rank of major in 2021 and lieutenant colonel in 2025. He and Anisha Isa Kalebic got engaged in 2023 and married in 2024.
Mister Frontier International 2025
On December 21, 2025, CONAN Daily honored Prince Abdul Mateen’s exemplary dedication to the military, foreign affairs and sports by appointing him Mister Frontier Brunei 2025. Before the final round, Prince Abdul Mateen won the Mister Global Influence award and the special title Mister Sovereign Commander Frontier 2025.
In the end, Prince Abdul received the highest score and won the Mister Frontier International 2025 crown. Also crowned were Mister Frontier Diamond 2025 Karalo Maibuca, 26, of Tuvalu, Mister Frontier Sapphire 2025 Kaimauri Erati, 21, of Kiribati, Mister Frontier Emerald 2025 Winzar Kakiouea, 24, of Nauru and Mister Frontier Ruby 2025 Myrat Bayram, 35, of Turkmenistan.
