At around 8:00 p.m. on August 4, 2025, Brewer got off work from a Walmart store in Greenwood and stopped by a vape shop next door. While sitting in his car in the parking lot of the shop, he was shot allegedly by Malcolm S. Kohn Jr., 31, of Greenwood.

Brewer was rushed to the hospital. Kohn allegedly fled after opening fire.

On August 5, 2025, Brewer died from his injuries at the hospital and a warrant was issued for Kohn’s arrest. The Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (GCRFTF) of the U.S. Marshals Service adopted the case for a fugitive investigation.

The Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force (TRVFTF) of the U.S. Marshals in Memphis was brought into the investigation after the GCRFTF learned that Kohn was at a residence in the 900 block of Greer Street in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA. On August 13, 2025, the TRVFTF went to that residence with the fugitive apprehension team of the Memphis Police Department.

When the officers arrived, Kohn hid under a bed and refused to submit to a arrest. After using a police dog named Marko, they were able to force the suspect to surrender.

The accused murderer was arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail in Memphis. He will be extradited to Mississippi.
