Alfred Stephens of Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama, United States has died. He was 73.

Jaden Ellis Sanders

On the morning of October 17, 2025, Stephens had a verbal altercation with Jaden Ellis Sanders, 22, of Birmingham, Alabama at Pull-A-Part used auto parts in the 3500 block of 27th Avenue North off Vanderbilt Road in Birmingham. After the altercation, the former was shot by the latter, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

The department did not release details about the altercation. Whether or not Stephens and Sanders knew each other before the altercation has yet to be confirmed.

Sanders allegedly fled the scene after the shooting. At around 10:01 a.m., officers dispatched to the scene found Stephens lying unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and bleeding from his side.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded and transported Stephens to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital in Birmingham. On October 18, 2025, he died at the hospital from his injuries.

On October 20, 2025, the crime reduction team of the Birmingham Police Department took Sanders into custody in the 1100 block of Hayden Road in Warrior, Alabama. He will be booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham where he will be held without bond.
