William “Bill” Stevenson, 77, of Oak Hill, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, United States has been arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware. Accused of killing his wife, he failed to post $500,000 cash bail so he was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
Jill Biden
Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden, 74, is Stevenson’s former wife. Her husband Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., 83, served as the 46th president of the United States from January 20, 2021 to January 20, 2025.
In February 1970, Stevenson married Jill. At the time, she was attending the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.
While married to Jill, Stevenson opened The Stone Balloon Club, a bar near the University of Delaware. She reportedly met Joe in March 1975 although Stevenson claimed he introduced her to Joe in 1972.
In May 1975, a civil divorce between Stevenson and Jill was granted. Her attempt to maintain a half-share ownership in The Stone Balloon Club was unsuccessful.
Linda Stevenson
After divorcing Jill, Stevenson married Charles Barnes and Bernice Barnes‘ daughter Linda M. Stevenson. Bill and Linda have a daughter named Christina Stevenson.
On April 29, 2025, Linda turned 64. On December 28, 2025, New Castle County Police Department officers responded to a domestic dispute at a residence in Oak Hill where she and Bill lived.
The officers found Linda unresponsive in the living room of her residence. Despite lifesaving measures by officers at the scene, she passed away.
Linda’s body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy. Her caused of death has yet to be revealed.
On February 2, 2026, Bill was taken into custody without incident and charged with one felony count of murder in the first degree. He is accused of murdering Linda.
Neither Joe nor Jill has released a statement about Bill’s arrest. Whether or not Bill has retained an attorney is unclear.
