Lynette Hooker’s disappearance

Hailing from Onsted, Brian Hooker, 58, and his wife Lynette Hooker, 55, recently visited Hope Town, Elbow Cay, Abaco Islands, Bahamas. On the evening of April 4, 2026, the couple departed the district for their mooring elsewhere on the cay in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy.

According to Brian’s statements to the authorities, he and Lynette were heading toward their yacht called Soulmate when “unpredictable seas and high winds” caused her to fall overboard. She was reportedly holding the boat’s keys when she fell, which caused the engine to shut off and left him unable to maneuver the vessel toward her.

Brian claims he made desperate attempts to reach Lynette but strong currents and winds drove them apart. He eventually paddled the dinghy to shore, arriving at a marina around 4:00 a.m. on April 5, 2026 to report the incident.

The search and rescue operation was a massive multi-agency effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. Despite extensive aerial and sea surveillance, the only item recovered was a single flotation device found along the shoreline. Consequently, Bahamian authorities have transitioned the mission from a rescue operation to a recovery effort.

Brian Hooker’s arrest

On April 8, 2026, Brian was arrested in the Abaco Islands by the RBPF. He is currently being held as a suspect, though formal charges have not yet been filed.

RBPF assistant commissioner of police Advardo Dames confirmed that Brian was taken into custody for questioning based on probable cause. The U.S. Coast Guard is now leading a criminal probe into Lynette’s disappearance following reports of potential wrongdoing.

While Brian has publicly expressed his heartbreak and maintains that the event was a tragic accident, his stepdaughter Karli Aylesworth has called for a complete investigation. She told NBC News that her mother is a fit, capable swimmer and noted that Brian’s account to her involved him throwing a life jacket toward her mother though he was unsure if she reached it. He is represented by Terrel Butler.
