Jack Catterall, 32, of Chorley, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom is the new World Boxing Association (WBA) Regular Welterweight Champion. He won the title at “Glory in Giza” at the Pyramids of Giza in Giza, Egypt on May 23, 2026.

Jack Catterall vs Shakhram Giyasov

There were 10 professional boxing bouts on the “Glory in Giza” card. One was between Catterall and Shakhram Djamshedovich Giyasov, 32, of Uzbekistan and the United States, who competed for the then vacant WBA Regular Welterweight title.

Mark Nelson served as the referee while Mikael Hook, Enrico Licini and Manuel Oliver Palomo were the judges. After 12 rounds, the title bout went to the judges’ scorecards.

Hook scored the fight 119-108 while Licini scored it 116-111 and Palomo scored it 118-109 all in favor of Catterall. The victory improved Catterall’s professional boxing record to 33 wins and 2 losses.

On the other hand, the loss broke Giyasov’s undefeated record. He now has 17 wins and 1 loss.

After the win, Catterall called out WBA Super Welterweight Champion Rolando Romero, 30. The latter was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA to Cuban parents.

“Glory in Giza”

Commissioned by the Egyptian Professional Boxing Association, “Glory in Giza” was promoted by Spencer Brown, Eddie Hearn and Sergey Lapin. The matchmaker was Tom Dallas.

Thomas Trieber was the ring announcer while Todd Grisham, Adam Smith, Darren Barker and Barry Jones were the television announcers. Jamie Ward conducted the post-fight interviews.

In the main event, Rico Verhoeven, 37, of the Netherlands challenged World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, 39, of Ukraine. The challenger lost to the defending champion via technical knockout after 2 minutes and 59 seconds in the 11th round.

Including Egypt, England, the Netherlands, Ukraine, the U.S. and Uzbekistan, a total of 15 countries were represented. The others were Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cuba, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Giyasov was born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. He is now based in Brooklyn, New York, USA.
