Durham
Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Durham is a vibrant hub where rich history meets modern innovation. Once an agrarian community that grew rapidly into a world-capital of the tobacco industry following the Civil War, Durham has successfully transformed its industrial past into a dynamic, forward-looking present. Today, former textile mills and tobacco warehouses in the historic downtown area house bustling tech startups, award-winning restaurants, and lively arts venues.
Durham plays a vital role in the Research Triangle, a major center for technology, healthcare, and scientific research driven by nearby Research Triangle Park. The city is also renowned for its world-class educational and medical institutions, including Duke University and North Carolina Central University—the nation’s first publicly supported liberal arts university for African Americans. This legacy of Black entrepreneurship historically earned Parrish Street the title of “Black Wall Street”.
