Armenia officially joined the International Criminal Court on February 1, 2024. Seated in The Hague, Netherlands, the intergovernmental organization and international tribunal now has 124 member states.
On February 8, 2024, the ICC will hold a ceremony at the seat of the court in The Hague to welcome Armenia as the 124th member state. The ceremony will be attended by officials from the court, the Armenian government, other member states, the Trust Fund for Victims and the Assembly of States Parties.
Vladimir Putin
Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Vladimir Putin became the prime minister of the country on May 8, 2008. He has been the president of the country since May 7, 2012.
On March 17, 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russia’s incumbent president for war crimes. He is accused of being involved in the abductions of children from Ukraine.
On October 7, 2023, Putin turned 71. As a member of the ICC, Armenia is now obligated to arrest him if he enters the country.
Armenia and Russia
Russia has an embassy in Yerevan, Armenia and a consulate-general in Gyumri, Armenia. Armenia has an embassy in Moscow, Russia, a consular office in Sochi, Russia and consulates-general in Rostov-on-Don, Russia and Saint Petersburg, Russia.
On April 3, 1992, bilateral relations between Armenia and Russia were established. In 1994, the two countries formed the Collective Security Treaty Organization along with Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
On May 29, 2014, leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia signed the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, which came into force on January 1, 2015. Armenia’s accession treaty came into force on January 2, 2015 and Kyrgyzstan’s accession treaty came into effect on August 6, 2015.
On October 3, 2023, the national assembly of Armenia voted in favor of ratifying the Rome Statute, which enable the country to join the ICC. On October 14, 2023, the country’s incumbent president Vahagn Khachaturyan signed it into law. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for Putin, called it a wrong decision and Russia’s foreign ministry called it an unfriendly step.
