Chicopee, Massachusetts’ Betty Lou Zukowski laid to rest; Killer still unknown

Betty Lou Zukowski of Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States has died. She was 10.

On June 2, 1966, Zukowski was laid to rest. It would have been the fifth-grader’s 11th birthday.

Zukowski was 4’7″ tall and she weighed 75 pounds. She is Stanley Zukowski and Mildred Zukowski‘s daughter.

At around 6:00 p.m. on May 26, 1966, Betty left her home in Chicopee after taking a phone call. The person she talked to on the phone was one of her girlfriends, she told her mother.

That was the last time Betty was seen alive. When she failed to return home that night, her parents called the Chicopee Police Department to report her missing.

On May 30, 1966, Betty’s body was found just off shore by young boys fishing in the Westfield River in West Springfield, Hampden County. She was beaten and her body was covered with mud.

Investigators believe Betty ended up in West Springfield after riding in a car operated by someone she knew. They have developed a composite sketch from two witnesses.

Betty’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries to her head, a skull fracture and terminal drowning, according to the chief medical examiner. A suspect has yet to be named.

Anyone with information about Betty Lou Zukowski‘s death is asked to contact the Chicopee Police Department or the West Springfield Police Department.
