The Republic of India is a country in South Asia. The country shares land borders with Bhutan, China and Nepal to the north, Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east and Pakistan to the west.

India was admitted to the United Nations on October 30, 1945. As a dominion, the country gained its independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947.

On January 26, 1950, India became a republic. The country’s incumbent and 12th president Pratibha Patil, 77, assumed office on July 25, 2007.
