In 1922, a treaty formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) or the Soviet Union uniting the Russian, Transcaucasion, Ukranian and Byelorussian republics, which became the world’s first constitutionally socialist state. Governed by the Communist Party, the union was formally dissolved by the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union in 1991.
