The Republic of Kazakhstan is a country in Central Asia. The country borders Russia in the north and west, China in the east and Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in the south.
Kazakhstan declared its sovereignty on October 25, 1990. The country was reconstituted as a republic on December 10, 1991, gained its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on December 26, 1991 and was admitted to the United Nations on March 2, 1992.
Nursultan Nazarbayev, 74, is the incumbent and first president of Kazakhstan. He assumed office on April 24, 1990.
